Towel repurposing project

Crafty Volunteers (Wellington) has 8 big boxes of new/near new towels in stock, that have small rips or stains on them. These items were previously destined for landfill, and we will be giving them another life.

These towels will be repurposed into breast pads, burp cloths, face wipes, bibs and hooded towels for babies. Once made, these items will go to Little Sprouts plus other baby related charities that we work with.

During the first 3 weekends of November, at our Crafting Workroom in central Wellington, we will be cutting this toweling to pattern and creating take-home sewing packs. Once all the packs have been created, we will put a call out to sewers to do the making up at home and return the pack to us.

Our cutting days for this project are:

  • Sunday 8 November – 10.00am til 4.00pm
  • Sunday 15 November – 10.00am til 4.00pm
  • Saturday 21 November – 10.00am til 4.00pm
  • Sunday 22 November – 10.00am til 4.00pm

If you can join us to help out, please bring (if you have them) dressmaking scissors, roller cutters and boards. If you don’t have them, we do have a couple that can be used.

You don’t need to be a sewer to be able to help us out (I don’t sew, or understand textile), as we will explain how to do the cutting.

Venue location and access:

The Crafting Workroom is Room 11 (level 1) in the Trades Hall, 124 Vivian St, Central Wellington.

Because our access is outside of normal business hours the main entrance is usually closed, so we will put a note on the front and back door with a phone # to call or text to gain access.

Parking is available on Marion St, or at either of the Wilson Parks (29 Marion St – behind the venue, or 26 Marion St – the multi-level parking building). Wilsons rates are $4 p/hr or $8 for up to 12 hrs.

Bus stops are on the corner of Taranaki and Vivian Sts (outside Briscoes and across the road, depending in which way you are coming from), or it’s a fairly easy walk from Courtenay/Manners Sts.

If you want to know more info about this project, or the other things that we have coming up, feel free to contact Maggie Vickers on 021-511004 or maggie@craftyvolunteers.org.nz.

If you can’t help us in person at our cutting days, but love what we are doing, please consider supporting us financially through our Givealittle Page, to ensure we can buy the equipment and consumables that we need.
