I’ve been enjoying getting out in the sun a bit over the last few weeks, and the evenings getting longer. Walking to and from work, along the waterfront, in daylight brings me a lot of joy. And hubby and I got some time together last weekend, and enjoyed a great day out on our motorcycles. Roll on summer I say!
Bears and Squares promotion
I’m starting to get really excited to see the toys and blankets that will be coming in over the next few weeks with this promotion – I know there is going to be lots of colour, love and fun in every item that’s made, and that they will be very much appreciated by the end recipients.
The Charity Yarn Stash Coordinators are starting to see a few items coming in, which is wonderful.
If you’re making toys to give, please can you ensure they get to your local Coordinator by the 15th of November at the latest, as this will give them time to get the toys to their local Charity Partners in time for their Christmas packs. For those of you that don’t have a coordinator in your region – feel free to send your items to us c/- Nancys Stitch Studio, 261 Thorndon Quay, Wellington, or to the coordinator in the region nearest to you.
If you’re making squares, or whole blankets, there isn’t really a due date for this, as we know we will be sewing squares together for a while, and they will be distributed as they get finished over the next few months. The aim is to have built stocks of blankets for our various charity partners, in time for them to distribute to recipients ahead of the cooler months starting next year.
I mentioned Natz from Mangatawhiri in the last email, who has committed to making 100 toys for the promotion, and she’s completed a few more in the last week. I’m blown away by just how adorable these are. Please feel free to post your pics on the Crafty Volunteers Facebook Page and/or the Charity Yarn Stash Facebook Group, so we can all see the awesome things you’re all making.
I spotted a post from Paula (from Tauranga, I think) this week, showing the squares she has finished. She commented that she wasn’t sure of the placement of them yet, but she has enough to complete a blanket. I sure hope she shares a pic of the finished item…
And here’s a pic from Maree, whos made heaps of lovely squares to send in to be made into blankets.
I think both of these ladies are from Tauranga – so it looks like theres gonna be some warm folks in the Bay of Plenty this winter.
Thanks so much ladies – and keep up the great work everyone.
Bear and Squares events
I hope that all of our Lower North Island and Canterbury crafters have Saturday the 3rd of November booked out in your diaries, and that you’ll be coming along to the Bears and Squares event in either Wellington or Christchurch. And if you’re not in either of these locations, but have crafty friends that are, please remember to tell them about our events – we will definitely make them welcome.
The details again are:
Wellington – Newlands Community Centre, 9 Batchelor St, Newlands. From 10am til 6pm.
Christchurch – Kiwi Family Trust, 420 St Asaph St, Phillipstown. From 10am til 2pm.
Entry fee = gold coin donation, or a food item to share.
We will be sewing or crocheting squares in to blankets, crocheting edges, and stuffing toys. If you’re new to crafting, we’ll have plenty of people there who will happily teach you to knit or crochet.
If you’re a Facebook person, please share our Wgtn Fb Event and Chch Fb Event with your friends. And if you can print a poster for your work or community, we would be very grateful of that too – Wgtn Poster / Chch Poster . Thanks heaps.
It’s going to be great fun – I can’t wait!!
Requests for Help from our Charity Partners
As you know this is a new initiative that we started a month or so ago, and we are just testing things out with it, before contacting all of the charities and organisations around the country that we hope will use it. The page stats indicate that some of you are looking to see what’s been requested – however we don’t get much info about how much you’re producing, and this will hopefully be something that we can build in to the website in the future.
If you know of an organisation that would benefit from having the needs met, please show them the Request for Help page, and ask them to contact us – we would love to be able to help communicate their need.
…Until next time…
That’s all from me – I’m heading to Picton for the weekend to visit family for hubbys birthday, which will be nice (as long as the sailing isn’t too rough with the storm that’s coming up the country…). Hopefully I’ll get a good few hours each way of Interislander crafting done.
Happy crafting everybody!
Yours – with love, compassion and hope
